Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are part of the emission control system of a diesel engine. They are fitted into the exhaust system, usually after the catalytic converter or combined together. They drastically reduce the harmful emissions and soot particles emitted into the atmosphere.

In normal urban driving the system will operate correctly and no problems will arise. However in repeated short distance driving or if the engine develops a fault the DPF may start to become blocked and a warning on the dashboard display will be displayed. This is when a long journey should be carried out so the DPF can unblock or ‘regenerate’ itself.
